Held at The Surgery on 19th April 2010.

Attended: Richard Pettifer, Sally Handford, John Ferguson, Dr Andrea Prior, Mari McKee.

2. Apologies for absence:

E. Cunningham, R.Vaughan

3. Minutes of the meeting of 8th Feb.2010 were approved and signed.

4. Matters arising from these minutes not considered elsewhere on the Agenda

a. Letter from Surgery to patient who wishes to join the Group- Mari has replied.

b. Surgery website progress report- At the moment the PPG information is in ‘Patient’s Corner’ which is rather obscure, and the links are not populated. Dr Fisher is updating, so the PPG agreed to keep an eye on the website.

c. Staff parking in Clift Meadow- John reports that the Trustees are happy for staff to park there. Mari is informing staff.

5. Report on actions taken since the last meeting

a. Use of poster as full page ad in The Villager- It is not possible to get a free ad in The Villager or in any of the other magazines. John suggested Bramley Parish Council bi-annual newsletter. Richard will ask the Parish Clerk in Sherborne St John if the PPG can be flagged as a new local service. Mari will give 6 posters to John, 2 to Richard and 1 to Sally, for village notice-boards.

b. North Hants Alliance PPG

i. Report from Chairman The Chairman reported that he had attended the meeting of the North Hants Alliance PPG on behalf of the Clift PPG and had been somewhat dismayed by what he had found. The NHA PPG appeared not really to know what it was for. Most of the members were Practice Managers and they seemed to be targetting some of the objectives set centrally for their Practices. Some were keen on the NHAPPG carrying out prostelysing action for “better health” such as producing posters and undertaking campaigns. Others supported action to undertake a survey of individual patients to see what they might want in the way of improved services. A “pilot” survey has been undertaken in one area and some apparently rather inconclusive results were produced. All surgeries in the Alliance have been asked to distribute the survey. However, whether many results will arise and what will be the value of them are open questions.

I asked whether the Group had any terms of reference and after some hesitation a few bullet points on a single A4 sheet were unearthed. I pointed out that without some clear ToRs the group had no idea what it was for or what it was trying to do. I was promptly tasked with drafting some proper ToRs. This I have done and they have been circulated to the group and will be discussed at the next meeting.

The jury is surely out on the value of this Group.

6. New items for discussion:

a. Raised by patients or lay members- Choose & Book System – report from Chairman. Following meetings and discussions with the Medical Director of N Hants Hospital, Richard suggests that GPs do not raise patient expectations by using Choose & Book without qualification. It would be better to advise that it is a trial system which works better with some clinics than others and that if a message is received from the web site that no appointments “have been released” for the clinc, then it is best to abandon the system and use the telephone number provided as an alternative.

b. Raised by the Practice: Mari has received an e mail from Mr B Jenkins which was read by all. Richard will respond and invite him to join the group.

c. Practice Survey- Agreed to review PPG’s existence at next meeting, as it was felt that the survey may suffice.

7. Next meeting: Monday 19th July, 1pm at Clift Surgery.
